I recently volunteered to play piano at a Rotary Club luncheon for seniors at Ithaca’s Lifelong center. The program consisted of stride piano, rags and novelty pieces from the 1920s.
I’ve been playing for seniors since I was about 10 years old when I would accompany my mother for singalongs. Little did I know then that those old Gershwin and Cole Porter tunes would later become staples of my jazz and stride piano repertoire. Years later in the conservatory, I’d practice playing my recital programs for local senior groups and they were probably my best audiences!
More to come in the Finger Lakes area with upcoming performances at Lifelong in Ithaca, and senior centers in Groton, NY.
